Many business owners think once they get their website online, that it’ll automatically be seen by the general public. Unfortunately, nothing can be further from the truth. When you go live with your new website, it’s like a star in the sky of stars. People won’t visit your website by accident. Don’t count on people finding it unless you promote it.
When getting your business website online, there are things you need to think about. Having a website designed and developed for you is like making a commercial. If you never put that commercial on the air, no one will ever see it. If you never put any marketing into your website, then no one who doesn’t know you will ever find it.
You may have heard in the online marketing world, the term “SEO”, or “Search Engine Optimization”. What does this term mean?
The goal of Search Engine Optimization is to show up when people search for keywords relating to your business on search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, and others. For example, a criminal defense attorney wants to show at the top of Google when people search that term. Generally you look for terms that people would put into a Google search before they know your business, or before they know they even need your services.
Google alone has over 200 search engine “ranking factors”, which allow Google to figure out what your website is about and if it will be helpful to people searching for information on the topic.
The most important being the content on your website. Businesses and “SEO’s” used to be able to fool google by using “blackhat” tactics to make Google think your website was more important than it was. Google’s Search Engine has evolved tremendously where can now see what contains information the searcher is searching for. Think of how many times you have to search for what you’re looking for before you find it. (Though, they’re not perfect)

Search Engine Optimization FAQ’s
Will Google (or other search engine) get angry if I use an SEO company?
Google doesn’t want you to use things that are against their policies. Things that fall under “Blackhat SEO”, which include things like using linkfarms (websites for the purpose of linking to your website)to link to your website. Keyword stuffing (mentioning the keyword you’re trying to rank for over and over where it degrades the visitor’s experience. However, that doesn’t mean they discourage you from using one. They just want you to use a reputable one.
Once I get to the top of the search engine, are we done?
Search Engine Optimization is a moving target. Google adjusts their algorithm hundreds of times per year. Showing at the top of the search results page today, doesn’t mean you’ll show tomorrow. Not to mention your competitors may also be optimizing their content at the same time, making it an arms race.
